Those so-called healthy foods for your body may be doing wonders for your waistline and your well-being, but those dried fruits that you munch on during your break could cause problems for your teeth.
According to Dr. Jeffrey Gilmor from the Glen Dental Center in Glenview Illinois, there are several healthy foods for your body that your doctor may recommend, but some of those foods should be enjoyed in moderation.
Healthy Carbs
You may be patting yourself on the back for kicking white bread, white rice and potatoes to the curb, but whole grain and wheat alternatives can be just as bad for your teeth. Your saliva metabolizes the carbs into sugar producing acid that will erode the enamel on your teeth. Brown rice and whole grain pasta are just as bad and the grains can get caught between your teeth.
Dark Foods
You may have stopped drinking coffee and tea to keep your teeth white, but that marinara sauce that you love so much could be just as damaging. Dr. Gilmor explains that because the enamel on your teeth is porous, it will absorb the foods you eat and the drinks you drink. Cranberries and blueberries, curry sauce and even your grandmother’s favorite barbecue sauce can stain your teeth.
Citrus
Lemons, oranges, grapefruits, Kiwi fruit, and even tomatoes are loaded with natural sugar; however, it is the acidic nature of the fruit that causes the most damage. Enjoy citrus fruits with a meal and always be sure to rinse with water.
Dried Fruit
Sticky dates, apricots, papaya, and figs are just some of the dried fruits that can cause problems for your teeth. Loaded with sugar and a fiber that traps and binds sugars on your teeth dried fruits can be just as gooey as saltwater taffy.
Energy and Sports Drinks
Sports and energy drinks may be refreshing after a workout or for a quick pick me up, but sports and energy drinks are packed with sugar. Opt for water instead and go light on the lemon slices.
